I can confirm it too. Running from the Gutsy livecd on X86_64 I could not get the icedtea- java7-plugin to work (See bug #152362).
A manual install of j2re1.4-mozilla-plugin did not work either, but copying the file libjavaplugin_oji.so from /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins to /usr/lib/firefox/plugins solves it and the j2re1.4 works in Firefox on x86_64.
