I might be wrong, but I think certain applications cause the crash.

After de-installing the flash browser plugin some days ago, I didn't
experience the problem any more. That is, until I started playing
around with Eclipse. My system has crashed twice this weekend, and each
time I was running Eclipse.

It might be a coincidence though.

Incorrect. Nouveau is supposed to work fine on this chipset.

I'm not entirely sure what's happening here. Issues like this on these
chipsets disappeared for everyone I've seen (including me, my laptop has
the same chipset) quite a long while ago.

Can you attach the versions of kernel, xorg-x11-drv-nouveau, libdrm and
mesa-dri-drivers that you're using.

Also, before the vm timeouts are there any other messages from nouveau?

Thanks!

Hi

I am getting the same situation. Fresh install of Fedora 16 x86_64 last
weekend, fully patched. I tend to get the complete freeze when I am
watching a video. I first thought that windowing it and messing in
Firefox was the cause, but one of the four freezes today (yes, four) was
while watching fullscreen and my hands were nowhere near the keyboard!

I have also noticed that NO keys work after the crash - can't turn
NumLock off or CapsLock on. But after a little while, the HDD light may
flicker occasionally.

Then I logged in as root, told yum to erase xorg-x11-drv-nouveau (which
also removed an xorg-x11-drivers package). (I think I didn't do this
last time!)

Then I installed xorg-x11-drv-nvidia and kmod-nvidia from RPM Fusion's
"NonFree" REPO. My PC booted up fine, but withouth Plymouth startup
(will have to tweak the grub.conf to fix that) but I have been watching
videos all afternoon with no more crashes.

And as a bonus, with the proprietary drive, glxgears runs much faster!

So unless you are a purist and WANT to use the noveau driver, I suggest
migrating to the proprietary one.

Was just running the default Fedora 17 desktop with two screens. Was
mousing over on the secondary screen on a remote X11 browser window when
the mouse stopped moving. After much thrashing, I was able to get it to
move a little bit on screen, then nothing. I logged in to the box over
ssh and tried killing the Gnome Shell, followed by the Gnome Display
manager, followed by the Xorg server itself, but the screen remained
frozen.

Will attach excerpt from /var/log/messages showing crash behavior and
kernel dmesg at subsequent boot.

I have just updated with Fedup from Fedora 20 to Fedora 21.

Owing to a driver problem with the RPMFusion proprietary nvidia driver,
I have reverted to Nouveau. Sadly this problem is **STILL** -- YEARS
later -- in effect!

I have the same GT240 card. I can't work for more than about 1 hour
when the PC Freezes and the logs show repeated events of:

This message is a reminder that Fedora 20 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 20. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '20'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 20 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

I have the same problem, with Fedora 23 too.
The PC have random freezes; sometimes it remain freezes, and I most force
reboot with the PC button; other times the PC will restart after a few seconds
of freeze.
The Nvidia GT 240 is inusable with nouveau drivers (the proprietary drivers
work fine).
But proprietary legacy nvidia drivers (340xx) are no more present in Fedora 23
rpmfusion (and they old versions do not work with Fedora 23), and so I can not
use Fedora 23.
