gwi have you tried to remove vesafb from blacklist-framebuffer on that system with i810. Maybe that will work, and if you are using nvidia-glx- new restricted drivers try nvidia-glx non-restricted. That worked on my system, but nvidia-glx does not support visual effects or 3D.
