Public bug reported:

Initially loaded onto formatted old drive "windows xp"-"installer
crashed"dialogue box came up,suggested fault was faulty hard drive which i was
suspicious of anyway.
Decided to fit entirely new hard drive and start from scratch-still the same
fault.
Im having to use operating system from memory stick temporarily and it works
fine until memory runs out.
The only add on to the system is an Epson m2400 laser printer.
