@Dan: right the same thing that's just happened to me... The only addition I can make is that after booting and logging for the first time into the newly installed distro, the application 'Kdesktop' started sucking all system memory up to 90%, until the desktop got nearly frozen. Then a dialog opened reporting Kdesktop crash, and I got full control back. Obviously I'm not claiming the two things may be related.
