Just for future reference, it was unclear in my mind why the logs showed
apt-get update succeeding which seemed to require dns
(archive.ubuntu.com).  The reason that worked was that http_proxy was
set for apt.  When using an http proxy, the client system does not
resolve the Host, but rather leaves that to happen on the proxy.
