So to re-cap again. I believe the situation is: If you do the upgrade via to Gutsy the GUI tool System -> Administration -> Update Manager all is well.
If you do the upgrade using apt-get this will not remove evms for you and you are likely to be in trouble, You have to remove evms yourself. sudo aptitude remove evms and re-boo the PC.
