Hello,

now two nearly sleepless nights later I repaired the problem !
It has nothing to do with pam-authentication, but seems to be a problem of the
graphics-driver !
First some hardware information: My computer is an Asus-mainboard with
nforce-chipset and on-board Nvidia Geforce 6150-graphics. In my edgy-system I
used the nvidia-driver which I had downloaded from Nvidia-website and compiled
on my machine.

Upgrade to gutsy changed the xorg.conf file to a failsafe-version, which used
the vesa-driver for graphics. With this vesa-driver the odd behavior with the
authentificaton-failure occurred.
I just changed back to my old (edgy)-xorg.conf file and edited line 118 and
changed from nvidia to vesa-driver -- and with this file gdm worked without any
authentification problems !!
I was then able to use the proprietary-driver-install-function inside Ubuntu to
load and install Nvidia-driver -- and now everything works fine.

I attach some log-files to this message.

Can anyone explain this strange behaviour ??

Regards,

Martin
