Newer findings: Excluding the switchbox and connecting keyboard and mouse directly to the PC had no further effect: Sometimes the system hung, sometimes not.
Since sometimes I could login and sometimes the system froze the first thing I noticed was that the moment of freezing changed in time from the login-screen to the next - shortly befor the desktop comes up. With further playing around I got the impression, that it is necessary to click once with the left mousbutton into the name-field at login. I usually didn't do so, because the insertmark is already positioned in the name-field and blinking, so why clicking once again into this field? But it looks that if I immediately key in my login name without this first click (the mouse pointer after startup is located some cm above the names-field) then more than once the system frozes. In the meantime I installed Ubuntu 7.10 and 4 repeated test showed that all works fine also without a first click into the names field. I consider the case as setteled.
