Public bug reported: After upgrading to Ubuntu 16.10: the mouse cursor movements became absolute (similar to Wacom tablets, but unable to reach the edges or corners of the screen), rather than relative to where my finger was initially placed on the touchpad. My laptop is a Lenovo Ideapad 310, but https://askubuntu.com/questions/865690/ describes the same issue happening on a Dell laptop.
Manually installing xserver-xorg-input-all resolved the issue, which indicates that the decision to switch to xserver-xorg-hwe by default was severely premature.
