I have had the exact same problem after upgrading from Feisty to Gutsy (release
version).
System froze for no apparent reason while surfing the web, caps lock and scroll
lock leds blinking. Only a hard reboot worked. Never had anything like that
under Feisty.
My hardware is completely different from the original poster, only thing
in common is that I also have an Nvidia card (using nvidia binary
drivers).
