I have an R30 and I get mostly the same behavior. After upgrading to Gutsy (on release day) the volume keys no longer do anything by themselves. The mute button works and then I can unmute by pressing a volume key, but this seems to be happening without the knowledge of the OS. Likewise the LCD brightness buttons work but the OS doesn't seem to know the action is occurring.
Previously on Feisty, changing volume would pop-up this volume widget in the center of the screen showing the volume change (also the volume applet would show the changes). Same occurred for the LCD brightness.
