All the problems that I described and the one that is the subject of the bug report are in context: system booted on a fifth position virtual disk on the SATA controller, on a virtual machine under VirtualBox. There was a report when I wanted to install the VirtualBox packages on a new system but booted in the context described. Symptoms are identical with xenial.
I am not a "super specialist" nor VirtualBox nor GRUB nor Linux but I think VirtualBox does not correctly handle the boot of the virtual disks from the fifth position of the SATA controller, GRUB get bad parameters from VirtualBox that it transmits to the Linux kernel. But as said in the previous message, I have a solution: do not boot on a virtual disk beyond the fourth position of the SATA controller.
