Not a Ubuntu user, but I used to had the same problem with my Radeon X550. After the upgrade to xorg-server 1.4, mesa 7.0.1 and xf86-video- ati 6.7.xxx the freezes disappeared. I've been using compiz/compiz- fusion 0.5.2 full-time (with EXA, to use the new zero-copy-tfp) since September 14 without a single problem.
