I had a problem with Ubuntu 14.04 and the latest supported nvidia drivers. Every time I locked my screen, it would lose the orientation. I was regularly using the nvidia X server settings application to correct the screen layout.
In order to correct it, I opened the System Settings application and made a couple modifications via the Displays options, and applied my changes. The changes weren't important, I just put it back to the same settings when I was done.
