A possible cause is a partially removed previous installation of MySQL: /etc/init.d/mysql script is present (this script tries to use /etc/mysql/debian.cnf to ensure any running servers have been shut down), but /etc/mysql/debian.cnf has been removed.
Try deleting /etc/init.d/mysql and reinstalling -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1693954 Title: package mysql-server-5.7 (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mysql-5.7/+bug/1693954/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
