Sorry, my comment disappeared, I'll try again. My Linux Mint 18.1 Cinnamon task bar did not respond to clicks from the touch pad. Nor did the quick-launch, the system tray, or the Menu - in short, the whole bottom bar of the desktop. The Menu responded to the Windows (Super) key, but when I clicked on it, it disappeared without responding. In the Welcome Screen, I clicked on Drivers, and, after the Driver Manager demanded my password and updated the cache, it offered me three choices of driver for my NVIDIA C77 GEForce 8200M G ( I don't know what that is - a graphics card?). On the advice in a comment above, I changed my selection from nvidia-304 to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau, an open-source driver. This ended the above problem. What problems it causes I don't know - maybe loss of some function I don't care about.
