Public bug reported: My initrd in recent kernels is 4x larger than in slightly older kernels, making /boot just large enough. It seems unlikely this growth is intended:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 44052519 May 13 12:29 initrd.img-4.10.0-19-generic -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 44050984 May 13 12:28 initrd.img-4.10.0-20-generic -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 44054896 May 20 11:59 initrd.img-4.10.0-21-generic -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 10767900 May 13 12:29 initrd.img-4.2.0-16-generic -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 10767780 May 13 12:29 initrd.img-4.8.0-26-generic so that's an extra 34MB for each image. I'll try unpacking them later to figure out where they went - but I guess it could be anywhere between the kernel and the initrd-tools ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 17.04 Package: linux-image-generic 4.10.0.21.23 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.10.0-20.22-generic 4.10.8 Uname: Linux 4.10.0-20-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.20.4-0ubuntu4 Architecture: amd64 AudioDevicesInUse: USER PID ACCESS COMMAND /dev/snd/controlC0: dg 2366 F.... pulseaudio CurrentDesktop: XFCE Date: Sat May 20 12:02:08 2017 HibernationDevice: RESUME=/dev/mapper/davros--vg-swap_1 InstallationDate: Installed on 2015-12-25 (511 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu-Server 15.10 "Wily Werewolf" - Release amd64 (20151021) Lsusb: Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub MachineType: TOSHIBA Equium A100 PccardctlIdent: Socket 0: no product info available PccardctlStatus: Socket 0: no card ProcFB: 0 inteldrmfb ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-4.10.0-20-generic root=/dev/mapper/hostname--vg-root ro RelatedPackageVersions: linux-restricted-modules-4.10.0-20-generic N/A linux-backports-modules-4.10.0-20-generic N/A linux-firmware 1.164.1 RfKill: 0: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes SourcePackage: linux UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to zesty on 2017-03-05 (75 days ago) dmi.bios.date: 10/23/2006 dmi.bios.vendor: Phoenix Technologies LTD dmi.bios.version: 2.10 dmi.board.name: MPAD-MSAE Customer Reference Boards dmi.board.vendor: Intel Corporation dmi.board.version: Not Applicable dmi.chassis.asset.tag: No Asset Tag dmi.chassis.type: 1 dmi.chassis.vendor: No Enclosure dmi.chassis.version: N/A dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnPhoenixTechnologiesLTD:bvr2.10:bd10/23/2006:svnTOSHIBA:pnEquiumA100:pvrPSAABE-00J008EN:rvnIntelCorporation:rnMPAD-MSAECustomerReferenceBoards:rvrNotApplicable:cvnNoEnclosure:ct1:cvrN/A: dmi.product.name: Equium A100 dmi.product.version: PSAABE-00J008EN dmi.sys.vendor: TOSHIBA ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug zesty -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1692208 Title: initrd 4x size between 4.8 and 4.10 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1692208/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
