Public bug reported:

I'm running Ubuntu 16.04.2 on an unibody iMac from 2009. However, even
with the most recent HWE stack (kernel 4.8), the display stays black
after suspend. I can ssh into the machine, so wakeup is OK, but the
display doesn't do anything anymore. Blindly switching to the console
and back also does not help.

I will update this report with information from
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Debugging/Backlight once I get around to
it.
