Hey, I just spend a long time debugging this. And suddenly it hit me. In dapper I was using fglrx, in the upgrade to edgy this was removed. Now that I reinstalled fglrx in edgy, the problem is solved...
I guess you can close this one up, sinse it's a freak problem unlikely to occur for others. The problem never was gnome-power-manager , /var/log/messages always stated: gnome-power-manager: (finalbeta) DPMS blanking screen because the lid has been closed on ac power.
