Be advised that any hammering required to break up tile could affect the ceiling downstairs. Also be advised that the plywood was likely installed to increase the subflooring strength and provide a more level surface. My last experience with ugly, cheap tile ended up being a nightmare. It was some form of industrial tile that wouldn't break easily. If the tile doesn't break up easily, I'd recommend renting a demo hammer and going at the tiles sideways. I'd imagine the plywood is simply screwed into the flooring so it shouldn't be too hard to take up.
