To make my workaround permanent, I tried adding the following lines to
/etc/network/interfaces:


auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp


Weirdly, this hosed my system to the point it could no longer boot to login 
screen. It got totaly stuck at configuring eth0 (no matter if the cable was 
connected or not).
