The script itself is not special to Ubuntu but taken from upstream. And while I can see a not too complex fix adapting it in a style like "guest_is_on" to return the wanted content in a variable to avoid polluting the result with any output it should be fixed there still.
As far as I was able to check it is still broken the latest master as of today.
