Public bug reported: I'm trying to get a gtx1050 card working in linux. I've installed the latest nvidia drivers (375.39) and my main issue is that the card does not seem to be recognized by the system. Secondary issue is the nvidia drivers aren't showing up in Software & Updates.
lspci -nn | grep '\[03' returns: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0102] (rev 09) ..which is my integrated graphics. This link suggests OP's problem was solved with a BIOS update: https://askubuntu.com/questions/523528/why-does-ubuntu-14-04-not-recognize-nvidia-geforce-310m-hardware I'll try that next.
