I did try to install the upstream kernel linux- image-4.11.0-041100rc8-generic_4.11.0-041100rc8.201704232131_amd64.deb and linux- headers-4.11.0-041100rc8-generic_4.11.0-041100rc8.201704232131_amd64.deb but unfortunately the system barely boots and the networking is messed up after the change. I can't tell if the cifs problem is any better.
