I've also just now experience this error when starting a video in Firefox (right after the ad started to display, the whole desktop froze, only the mouse could be moved. No ALT+F1 combo etc). However, I could log in via ssh. The hard drive LED stood on for a good while after the freeze occurred. The error is very inconsistent.
