The problem is that my Ubuntu 64 doesn't boot at all, so I can't "sudo
gedit" :).  You have to disable it directly from Grub.

Press Esc to bypass the Grub countdown, press 'e' to start editing,
scroll down to "# defoptions" line, press e to start edit, delete the
options 'quiet' and / or 'splash' with the delete key, press Esc again
and then 'b' to boot.
