Public bug reported:

Up to last night, I was using my system just fine, with my 1280x1024
monitor. Today, the system boots up with all the text and icons much
larger, and Settings -> Displays now informs me that my monitor is only
1024x768 and won't permit me to change it back to the correct setting.
I haven't changed anything, hardware or software. How do I make it work
correctly again?
