got sound working on my acer extensa 5220 - realtek alc268
headphone plug now works and automutes internal speaker. i also have now all
necessary mixer controls.

needed to install the "linux-backports-modules-generic" package and adding
manually the following line at the end of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base :
options snd-hda-intel model=acer

i think sound is not as loud as in windows xp but loud enough for me.

thanks for help... i think that new ubuntu users shall be told that they
have to install the package and add the line if they own the realtek 268
chipset
