Public bug reported:

No sound from browser using 52.0+build2-0ubuntu0.14.04.1
52.0+build2-0ubuntu0.12.04.1 AMD64

Release 12.04 and 14.04... I don't use 16.04 due to systemd.

I upgraded Firefox to version 52 on an ALSA-only linux system.

Actual results:

All sites that play audio are now broken.

Expected results:

Audio playback should have continued to work.

This new PulseAudio requirement renders Firefox useless to me as a
general-purpose browser. PulseAudio is not viable on some systems, and
due to its design, that is extremely unlikely to ever change. By making
Firefox depend on it, you have just forced me to spend my time preparing
a migration to another browser on the systems I maintain or support.

Please return ALSA support to the standard build so that we can once
again use Firefox.

I suggest that Ubuntu REMOVE firefox from the repo's and instead switch to Pale
Moon as the default browser.

Alternatively I suggest IceWeasel, if they have not followed the same
path since it is based off FF with out branding.

Last option is for Canocicial/Ubuntu to patch FF and return ALSA
support.

I do not use PulseAudio, and never will. I have setups which require
ALSA and only ALSA installed to work, ie: various ASLA plugins which are
used to process audio.

Additionally with the removal of flash plugin support in FF, and
upcoming CPU support removal, I don't think this program is very
"Linux-y" or "Ubuntu" in its support or ideas. As much as you may hate
on flash, it regrettably is still a need in 2017. Some sites are never
going to change, and will just force users to use a browser that
supports it or really the intent is to force a change in OS to something
that support its, IOW, NOT Linux(Ubuntu)!
