Hello Tormod, unfortunately I have since bought and installed an Nvidia graphics card so that I could finish the installation on this machine and as a result I can't now reproduce the original problem that I had with the onboard ATI chipset.
Also the problem with the onboard ATI chipset prevented me from actually installing Ubuntu 7.10 in the first place so I don't think I would have been able to provide the X server information required.
