Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Ever since I installed the Gutsy Gibbon (with all packages updated as of
2007-10-17), compiz segfaults whenever I try to activate visual effects.
Running gnome-appearance-properties from a terminal, I get the following
output:

nvidia_new restricted driver is already enabled
Checking for Xgl: not present.
Detected PCI ID for VGA: 02:00.0 0300: 10de:0314 (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA])
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: present.
Checking for non power of two support: Segmentation fault (core dumped)
Not present.
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity

Happens more or less every time. Please note that there seems to be a
degree of randomness. Twice I got compiz to work properly, but it would
segfault again on the next login. I usually (like, 90% of the time) get
the error above. However, I have also observed that the check for non
power of two support passed successfully, but compiz segfaulted on the
next check. Usually, I get a dialog that says "Desktop effects could not
be enabled.", but sometimes the system just hangs, requiring a cold
restart, and on some occasions, the system hangs, but I can still move
the mouse cursor and kill X with Ctrl-Alt_Backspace.

I'm using an NV31 [GeForce FX 5600XT] graphics card, and the nvidia-glx-
new-100.14.19+2.6.22.4-14.9 driver (as automatically installed by the
restricted drivers applet) and the newest
compiz-1:0.6.0+git20071008-0ubuntu1.

I'd like to add that compiz worked absolutely flawlessly with this
nvidia chipset on Feisty Fawn, so I'm quite disappointed by not getting
it to start at all on Gutsy Gibbon. I really don't think that my nvidia
card lacks some needed capability. Anyway I guess compiz shouldn't
segfault.

Thanks, Martin
