Public bug reported: gdm fails to start due to Ubuntu customizations. Ubuntu has modified the behavior of gnome-session such that ubuntu.session is the default. When gdm launches gnome-session to start the greeter, this results in gnome-session trying to launch unity instead of gnome-shell.
One workaround that I have proven works is to delete /usr/share/gnome- sessions/sessions/ubuntu.session with a symlink to gnome.session. This allows gdm to start up correctly and I can then login to a gnome-shell session. Another possible workaround would be to patch gdm to launch "gnome- session --session=gnome", similarly to how /usr/share/xsessions/gnome.desktop was patched. srwalter@brock:~$ lsb_release -rd Description: Ubuntu 16.10 Release: 16.10 ** Affects: gdm3 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1672064 Title: Blank screen after switching to gdm display manager To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/1672064/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
