I tried dmesg | grep -nv and found this:

[13.044000] nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel

That doesn't sound good.

I also tried the advice from http://forum.ubuntu-
fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=154950, but to no avail.

The most damning indicator continues to be the Xorg error (that weirdly
doesn't ever actually show up in Xorg.0.log, but only when directly
viewing the "crash" output when it fails to load):

(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"
(II) Module already built-in
Error: API mismach: this NVIDIA driver component has version
100.14.19, but the NVIDIA kernal module's version does not match.
Please make sure that the kernel module and all NVIDIA driver
components have the same version.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module! Please ensure
(EE) NVIDIA(0): that there is a supported NVIDIA GPU in this system, and
(EE) NVIDIA(0): that the NVIDIA device files have been created properly.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Please consult the NVIDIA README for details.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

I've tried re-installing the restricted drivers package several times
now, including from the terminal, but it never seems to work.
