Public bug reported:

Today, UAL just passes the session environment to launched apps. This
doesn't work well in all use cases (see bug #1670727).

UAL should have a mechanism for modifying the different environments in
which it launches apps (at least XMir vs. native, maybe also local vs.
libertine vs. snap).
