According to the Debian bug report, this should be fixed via the xfonts recommended package. However, I still get the same error message when attempting to run ghemical (3.0.0-2 on Ubuntu Zesty). Tested with installing all the xfont packages listed on http://packages.ubuntu.com/zesty/ghemical, but same result.
