I just figured out that it must be related to the upgrade from feisty. Pleople with fresh installs seem not to be affected by this, and I was able to fix it with "gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/gnumeric". So I guess Gnumeric fails on an old setting that the new version can't cope with.
