I reported bug #152265 with similar problems. The screen is blank while booting up, however it did appear with the livecd but at the wrong resolution (it was not widescreen).
Just to point out my laptop is widescreen with resolution 1440x900. Hardware is Mobile Intel PM965 chipset with ATI Mobility Radeon X1350 graphics. Roel Huybrechts suggested modifying the usplash.conf to 1024x768. So I looked in /etc/usplash.conf and found the resolution to be 1280x1024. I changed it to 1024x768 but the screen was still blank during booting up.
