It affects Ubuntu-MATE 16.04.1, both 32 and 64bit but it seems to be more Ubuntu and less MATE for in Mint MATE 18.1 (=16.04.1) this problem does not occur. At least I have never seen this in Mint. I need right- ctrl-F1, then right-ctrl F7 (a black screen with blinking cursor appears) and then right-ctrl-F1 again to finally see the desktop allowing to either run the "Try" or "Install" choices.
