Matt, Previously, sudo modprobe nvidia resulted in an error, as you say. However, I just tried it just now and got no reaction (other than a return to the prompt). This has not changed the status of the issue, though, as switching to nvidia still yields an error. Vesa continues to function.
I'm working with a Lenovo ThinkPad T61, graphics card is nVidia Quadro NVS 140M. Package versions are as follows, according to Synaptic: xserver-xorg: Installed: 1:7.2-5ubuntu13 nvidia-glx-new: Installed: 100.14.19+2.6.22.4-14.8 linux-restricted-modules-common: Installed: 2.6.22.4-14.8 linux-restricted-modules-2.6.22-14-generic: Installed: 2.6.22.4-14.8 I tried again to switch to the nvidia driver, but was informed by X that it failed to initialize (I disabled Bulletproof as it was getting in the way of diagnosing the problem). Below is the specific error message I'm receiving, and I've attached my full Xorg.0.log from this "crash." (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module!
