I have tested indicator-applet on gnome-panel, it has the same issue. There the GTK Inspector works, and shows dead menu items as can be seen in the screenshot: http://people.ubuntu.com/~mitya57/inspector.png. I was also able to write a two-line fix for it (see the linked branch).
