I have a similar problem with a Dell 2407 (1920x1200) primary monitor and Dell 1905 (1280x1024) secondary monitor. I can get the primary monitor to display at 1920x1200, but the Gnome panel at top of screen and the bottom panel are sized and positioned as if the screen is 1280x1024 - ie the top panel only extends part way across the screen and ditto for the bottom panel which is also positioned part way up the screen as it it was only 1024 pixels high. Video card is the onboard Intel 965 on a Dell GX745.
