Don't know if this will help, but I heard that Ubuntu Mate does
something different with their network stack, so I switched (Ubuntu Mate
16.10). I had this same wifi drop with both Unity and Gnome 3, but have
had pretty much no issues on Ubuntu Mate -- one crash in a week, and I'm
not even sure that was the same as this problem and not something else.

So it may help to know that what isn't working in Unity/Gnome 3 does
work in Mate.
