Although I'm a bit knowledgeable about computers, I'm an almost newbie
in Linux. After a fresh install over XP SP2, I obviously tried to get
the internal wireless device to work, as it's how I connect at home
(GPRS when out of it, but that might be another chapter). It didn't
work.

It is recognized as eth1 in Network Definitions (sorry, it's not in
English) and as active; but console commands such as sudo lshw, sudo
pccardctl ident  and lspci -v do not list it. entering the appropriate
IP values for the router doesn't produce a connection either.

A kernel update to image 2.6.15.26 is suggested by the command 
sudo apt-get install linux-686
above but obviously no net connection exists.

Ubuntu 6.10 is not listed as a download at
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
