Although I'm a bit knowledgeable about computers, I'm an almost newbie in Linux. After a fresh install over XP SP2, I obviously tried to get the internal wireless device to work, as it's how I connect at home (GPRS when out of it, but that might be another chapter). It didn't work.
It is recognized as eth1 in Network Definitions (sorry, it's not in English) and as active; but console commands such as sudo lshw, sudo pccardctl ident and lspci -v do not list it. entering the appropriate IP values for the router doesn't produce a connection either. A kernel update to image 2.6.15.26 is suggested by the command sudo apt-get install linux-686 above but obviously no net connection exists.
