As of OTA13 (at least) this is no longer an issue. Pressing "Enter" in the SMS reply box from the notification area will add a newline, as expected. The SMS will not get sent until "Send" is pressed, also as expected. I suppose this has been fixed somewhere during the last year. I think it can be closed now.
