Perhaps it's ring? Compiz was using 40something percent of my memory (roughly 800MB) when leaving it running for a day or two, when I noticed that I was using Custom Effects. Switching back to Extra Effects, compiz's memory usage has not climbed above 11 percent in the 12 hours it's been running.
