I'm just curious if your still having this problem with the most current version of wine (0.9.46-0ubuntu1). Have you been able to check out http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=1554 to see any workarounds you might need to take care of when using Steam? Also, which version of Ubuntu are you using, 32bit/64bit, Gutsy/Fiesty?
