I had an USB key with an Ubuntu live-USB plugged in. I ran apt-get dist-
upgrade, which upgraded my linux-image packages. While upgrading, grub-
probe would always fail with a "error: not a directory" obscure message.

I tried uninstalling/reinstalling linux-image and grub-pc, but always
ended up with the same error message.

Finally, I just unplugged the USB key, and grub-probe would immediately
run fine.
