Hello Tormod,
i don't see any difference.

I add the modified xorg.conf here, so you can check, whether i made the
changes correctly:
****************************************************
# xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool,
using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades
*only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically
updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

I had an additional idea and made the following test:
I connected the CRT-Monitor to my new HP-PC and startet kubuntu, and it
worked, using the 2048x1536 Mode:

Here the xorg.conf from the new PC with the old CRT (starting from cd,
autodetected):

I guess, that the possible Modes from the Monitor are detected
correctly. But the ATI graphics card im my old PC seems not to be able,
to use these modes with the highest resolutions.

I hope this Information brings you further on.

friendly greetings
