Thanks for taking a look Sebastien. I attempted to print with eog, but exactly the same problem was exhibited, the printer received data but never printed. Switching drivers again worked. It is beginning to look like OpenOffice is the odd one out in that it WILL print.
Obviously it's not only evince's problem, so thanks for helping get closer to the cause.
